IG's recent visit to the Royal Hospital Chelsea - we were taken round the hospital by pensioner Paddy Fox, seen below, a mine of information who answered all our questions with patience and humour, and who concluded by taking us round his allotment:

At our 2007 AGM we were fortunate to have a fascinating presentation from Ruth Chivers, one of the UK's most respected garden writers and designers. With many examples from the US, in particular from California where she has lived for many years, Ruth covered the cross-fertilisation of design ideas between the US and the UK, and considered how these ideas might translate into a small garden setting.
Ruth has a number of books in print, and her next book, due for publication in 2009, is entitled "Meadows by Design", and is being written with US ornamental grass guru and nursery owner John Greenlee. She offers consultations for private clients, can provide a complete design service, and has an extensive body of work on which to base her photographic lectures. Ruth's email address is: ruthchiversat@mac.com
Below are three photographs taken on our recent visit to Great Dixter, showing a few of the stunning effects achieved:

Smoke trees (Rhus Cotinus) in full blaze, with Great Dixter's charactistic topiary hedges behind;

Exotic display, featuring prickly pears (opuntias) and agaves;

and flourishing aeoniums. (Photos by Joy Chamberlin)
